The story of the Melvin Memorial is the story of three young men from Concord, Massachusetts -- brothers Asa, John and Samuel Melvin -- who died while serving in the Union forces during the Civil War. Their younger brother, James, would survive the war and prosper as a Boston businessman. His wealth would allow him to commission his boyhood friend, sculptor Daniel Chester French, to create a memorial to his fallen brothers.
French, who fashioned icons for our nation including the Lincoln Memorial and the Concord Minuteman, believed the Melvin Memorial was one of his best works. Today, though in need of some restoration, it stands in Concord's Sleepy Hollow Cemetery as a powerful tribute to Asa, John and Samuel Melvin.
